What
is Avian Flu?
Avian
flu refers to any strain of the Influenza virus that is
adapted for birds. All avian flu viruses are of the Influenza
A species of viruses. Though any strain of flu adapted for
birds is considered an “avian flu”, the strain
that is referred to in most media publications and that
is causing immediate international concern is the H5N1 subtype,
or more specifically the HPAI A(H5N1) strain. This specific
strain of the virus has infected millions
of birds worldwide.
